VILLA DELLA PORTA BOZZOLO
In the heart of the Valcuvia valley, Villa Della Porta Bozzolo is one of the most fascinating historic homes in Lombardy
Built in the 16th century as a country house by the notary Giroldino de Portu, the villa still retains elements of its original rustic layout, such as the ancient kitchen and old wine press.
During the 17th century, the building was expanded with a courtyard and an elegant garden. But it was in the 18th century, thanks to Gian Angelo III Della Porta, that the residence took on its current appearance, that of a sumptuous holiday home immersed in nature.
The Italian garden, which offers different blooms depending on the season, extends across four scenic terraces connected by staircases adorned with balustrades, statues, and fountains, culminating in the spectacular "Theater," a lawn with a 1723 fishpond and surprising perspective effects towards the Belvedere hill.
The interiors, frescoed between 1724 and 1726, are a jewel of Lombard Rococo: from the Ballroom to the Gallery on the main floor, decorated with mythological and allegorical figures.
In 1884, the villa was purchased by Senator Camillo Bozzolo, a physician and patriot, who made it his summer residence. After a period of neglect, it was reborn in 1989 thanks to a donation to the FAI (Italian Environment Fund), which oversaw its restoration and enhancement.
Today, despite the loss of many original furnishings, the villa retains precious four-poster beds and a rich library with over two thousand volumes. The interior designed by architect Filippo Perego has restored the villa to the warmth and atmosphere of a true family home, making it an unmissable destination for those wishing to discover the history and beauty of Lake Maggiore.
