LAKE DELIO

Between mysterious legends and its use as a source of electricity, this small basin of the Veddasca Valley is a favorite destination for visitors

Lake Delio is a small lake located in the municipality of Maccagno con Pino and Veddasca. This body of water of glacial origin lies at approximately 930 meters above sea level, nestled between the mountains of Monte Borgna (1,158 m) and Monte Cadrigna (1,300 m). Its panoramic location offers breathtaking views of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding valleys.

Originally a natural lake, Lake Delio has undergone significant transformations since 1911, when a first dam was built for hydroelectric purposes. In the 1960s, the dam was raised and a second one was built, further altering the lake's appearance.

The lake currently serves as a reservoir for the Roncovalgrande hydroelectric power plant, with water drawn from here at night and on weekends, when energy demand is lower, and used to generate electricity during peak hours.

Shrouded in mystery and charm, this body of water is linked to legends handed down over time, from that of the ancient village called Elio, which rejected a beggar and then sank into the lake's waters, to that of San Silvestro, who tried to convert the villagers to Christianity but they chased him away, causing the village to be submerged as a sign of divine punishment.

Lake Delio is easily accessible by car from Maccagno, following provincial road 5 until two turnoffs: one at Ronchi and the other at Garabiolo. From these locations, you can access parking lots located near the lake. Once there, you can walk along the path that runs along the lake. The surrounding area is ideal for picnics, walks, and immersing yourself in the tranquility of nature.
