Cassano Valcuvia Mount San Martino
This 12 km, 770-meter-high circular hike starts from Cassano Valcuvia and leads to the summit of Monte San Martino, one of the symbolic sites of the Resistance in the Varese area.
The trail winds through beech and birch forests, climbing decisively to the scenic ridge.
Monte San Martino is not just a peak (1083 m), but a place of memory. Restored bunkers, trenches, and partisan shelters are located here, with information panels recounting the events of the freedom struggle. The area was the scene of clashes in 1943, during the first months of the Resistance. The silence of the forest and the commemorative crosses invite reflection and reflection.
The panorama, once you reach the ridge, is wide: it ranges from Valcuvia to the lakes of Ganna and Ghirla, up to the Alps and Monte Rosa. Among the rocks and old posts are the "tòch" of history – as they say around here, the pieces that remain to bear witness to a past lived intensely.
The route is varied and engaging, with climbs, false plans and technical but well-travelable descents. The environment is intact and quiet, perfect for hikers seeking an experience that combines nature, culture, and memory.
Recommended for those who love meaningful routes, scenic climbs, and history experienced on the field.
