MUSEUM OF CERAMIC DESIGN

In the heart of Cerro, a hamlet of Laveno Mombello, the MIDeC – International Museum of Ceramic Design – recounts over 160 years of ceramics history, closely tied to the local identity

Housed since 1971 in the historic Palazzo Perabò, the museum—initially called the Civica Raccolta di Terraglia—was founded with an initial core of ceramic works by the famous Richard-Ginori, which were joined over time by private collections and numerous donations.

The MIDeC is a specialized museum dedicated to the strong earthenware, a unique ceramic production that developed in Lombardy between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. Its rooms clearly and coherently display works that document the artistic, technical, and industrial evolution of Laveno ceramics, which became famous even beyond Italy's borders.

What made this production unique were the great artistic directors who worked in local factories. Among the most famous names are Guido Andloviz, a key figure in the twentieth-century Italian ceramic scene, and Antonia Campi, an innovative designer and internationally renowned ceramist.

Over the years, the museum has expanded its collection, including contemporary works that demonstrate how ceramics, once an everyday object, has always been a powerful means of artistic expression. The MIDeC is now a dynamic space, open to dialogue with contemporary art, thanks also to temporary exhibitions and cultural initiatives.

A visit to the museum is a unique opportunity to discover the ceramic excellence of Lake Maggiore and immerse yourself in a tradition that continues to evolve with creativity and innovation.
