MICRO MUSEUM CADERO
The mystery of the Mona Lisa and its famous theft by Vincenzo Peruggia has found its way into the small museum nestled in the Veddasca Valley
In the heart of the Veddasca Valley, in the ancient mountain village of Cadero (a hamlet of Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca), the Micro Museum dedicated to the enigmatic figure of the Mona Lisa opened in 2021. This small but evocative gallery was created to tell a fascinating story of local history, intertwined with one of the most famous art thefts of the twentieth century.
According to oral tradition, in fact, when Leonardo Da Vinci's masterpiece was stolen from the Louvre Museum in 1911 by Vincenzo Peruggia, it was hidden for two years in Cadero, inside the Lancellotti brothers' family restaurant, before being taken to Florence.
The museum offers a fascinating journey through period chronicles, eyewitness accounts, and detailed reconstructions of the theft, presented through original newspaper articles, films, and interviews. The exhibition explores the different perspectives that have fueled the debate among historians and enthusiasts: on the one hand, the official version of the investigation, on the other, the narratives handed down in the valley.
Beyond its historical significance, the Micro Museum is also a vibrant and dynamic space: it regularly hosts exhibitions by contemporary artists, thematic shows, and cultural initiatives related to the Mona Lisa, making it a unique place in the museum landscape of Lake Maggiore.
Opening hours: the museum is open upon request every day except Wednesday from 10.00 to 18.00, from May to October.
