RELIGIOUS PLACES

The traces and history of Christian spirituality in the Verbano Valleys

There are numerous religious places that tell the story, faith and Christian art of the Verbano Valleys, from the best known ones such as the Collegiate Church of San Vittore in Brezzo di Bedero, Santa Veronica in Caldè or the Sanctuary of Carmine in Luino, to the smaller(interesting for their spiritual and other aspects) sacred buildings, that dot the territory everywhere.

Several churches were built in the Romanesque period, an era of which they still show some characteristics despite the interventions carried out in the following centuries. Among them we can mention San Biagio in Cittiglio – with its important archaeological finds – and San Pietro in Gemonio.

In Gavirate, the Chiostro di Voltorre, part of an ancient Cluniac complex, has become today a lively cultural centre that preserves the charm of the ancient place of prayer intact, while finally, the votive Temple of the Medici d'Italia stands out, built in Duno in the 1930s to honour the memory of many doctors who fell in war and in the exercise of their profession.
